Pilot

As a local fairway expert, a pilot guides vessels from the sea to ports and vice versa. Pilots are also responsible for moving vessels within the port from one berth to another. The pilot works on the ship’s bridge in close cooperation with the officers and crew. Pilotage is highly responsible and precise work, since any mistakes can cause significant damage to the vessel or the environment.

Working as a pilot requires a Master Mariner qualification, sufficient sea experience, and specialized training. Additional requirements in Finland include proficiency in Finnish, Swedish, and English, good physical fitness, and excellent interpersonal skills.
