Safety guidelines for vessels requiring pilotage

Vessels to be piloted must comply with the international operational and safety recommendations concerning pilotage activities. Additionally, Finnpilot has established its own service terms to help ensure the safe embarkation and disembarkation of pilots.

Proper pilot ladder placement

  • On the calm side of the ship
  • As close to the centre of the ship as possible
  • Starting approximately 1.5 metres above the sea surface
  • During winter, they cannot be allowed to freeze, so should not be placed too much in advance.
